In the mid-1880s, a cowboy named Bunk Baxter would ride into Orlando, when Orange Avenue was still a dirt street, and wrestle an alligator in the middle of it while the whole town watched. Somebody caught it on camera. That photograph became one of the defining images of early Florida, and today a life-size bronze of the man and his gator stands in the city's Heritage Square.
Historians still argue the details: gator or crocodile, Bunk Baxter or a meat-market manager named Bud Yates. We're not here to settle it. We put the scene on a tee because either way it tells the truth: Florida raised a different kind of cowboy.
